ECP summons 9 ex-MPs linked to PTI for failure to submit wealth statements

ISLAMABAD: Despite already disqualifying nine lawmakers linked to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) from their legislative memberships in consequence of court convictions in 9 May cases, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has fixed for hearing today (Wednesday) a case against them over their failure to submit their wealth statements for the previous financial year, which is a mandatory requirement for sitting legislators.

In this context, a cause list issued recently by the ECP revealed that notices were issued to Ejaz Chaudhary, Shibli Faraz, Abdul Latif, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Zartaj Gul, Junaid Afzal Sahi, Shahid Javed, Muhammad Ismael and Rai Murtaza Iqbal for appearance before ECP in today’s hearing.

They comprise four former Punjab Assembly members, three ex-National Assembly members and two former senators.

The members of the Parliament and provincial assemblies are required to submit to the ECP, by 31 December each year, statements of assets and liabilities, including those of their spouses and dependent children, for the previous fiscal year, under Section 137 of the Elections Act, 2017.

Every January 1 the ECP publishes the names of legislators who do not share the required wealth statements, under Section 137 (2) of the Elections Act, 2017.

On 16 January each year, the legislative memberships of those lawmakers, who do not submit the required wealth statements for the previous fiscal year to the ECP by 15 January, are suspended under Section 137 (3).

When contacted, an ECP official, requesting anonymity, told Business Recorder that notices were issued to the nine ex-lawmakers for case hearing keeping in view that the wealth statements are required from them for the previous fiscal year— the period when they were the lawmakers—before disqualification.

In recent months, 17 PTI linked lawmakers have been disqualified by the ECP following their convictions by the courts.

These lawmakers comprise eight NA members, six PA members, and three senators.

Abdul Latif (NA-1 Chitral), Omar Ayub Khan (NA-18 Haripur), Ahmed Chattha (NA-66 Wazirabad), Rai Haider Ali (NA-96 Faisalabad), Sahibzada Hamid Raza (NA-104 Faisalabad), Rai Hassan Nawaz (NA-143 Sahiwal), Jamshaid Dasti (NA-175 Muzaffargarh), Zartaj Gul (NA-185 Dera Ghazi Khan), Ansar Iqbal (PP-73 Sargodha), Ahmad Khan (PP-87 Mianwali), Junaid Afzal Sahi (PP-98 Faisalabad), Shahid Javed (PP-115 Faisalabad), Muhammad Ismael (PP-116 Faisalabad), Rai Murtaza Iqbal (PP-203 Sahiwal), Shibli Faraz (Senate), Ejaz Chaudhary (Senate) and Murad Saeed (Senate) are among the disqua-lified legislators.

Except Dasti, the other 16 lawmakers were disqualified by the ECP for their convictions by the Anti-Terrorism Courts (ATCs) in the cases related to May 9 riots.
