LAHORE: The Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) has earmarked Rs4.5 billion for 54 socio-economic development schemes in the Mohmand Dam project area under confidence building measures (CBMs) as part of its corporate social responsibility initiatives, a Wapda spokesman said on Tuesday.

The spokesman said Rs1.9 billion had so far been spent during Phase-I on completion of 18 schemes related to infrastructure development, drinking water, health, education, sports and electricity in the project area.

He said work was under way on key schemes including the Abazai-Yousuf Baba Road and a drinking water supply project for Sappare Mulagori. Construction of five schools in districts Mohmand, Bajaur and Malakand would also begin soon.

The schools include Government Primary School Shaheed Banda, Government Girls Primary School Shaheed Banda and Government Primary School Daryab Kor in Tehsil Pindyali, District Mohmand, along with Government Girls Primary School Johar in Bajaur and Government Girls Primary School Ghwand in Malakand.

The spokesman said General Manager (PD) Mohmand Dam Project Fasih Ullah Paracha recently chaired a meeting to review development schemes being executed under the project’s CBMs.

The meeting was presided over by Additional Chief Secretary (P&D) Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Lt Islam Zeb (r), and attended by MNA from District Mohmand Sajid Khan.

Wapda is constructing the Mohmand Dam project on River Swat to store 1.29 million acre-feet of water, generate 800MW low-cost and environment-friendly electricity, and supply 300 million gallons per day of water to Peshawar for municipal use.
