ISLAMABAD: In the apparent backdrop of heightened tension in the region, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed Pakistan’s “sincere appreciation for Qatar’s continued and steadfast support for Pakistan’s peace initiatives.”

The PM stated this in a telephonic conversation with his Qatari counterpart Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Jassim Al Thani, said an official statement issued on Sunday.

He received a telephone call from the Qatar’s PM, who also holds the position of Qatar’s Foreign Minister, according to the statement.

“The two leaders discussed the evolving regional situation and ongoing peace efforts in the region. During their warm and cordial conversation, both leaders exchanged views on recent developments and reviewed progress regarding peace initiatives aimed at promoting regional stability — reaffirming the strong brotherly relations between the two countries,” the statement said.

Both sides underscored the importance of constructive engagement by all parties to ensure the success of ongoing peace efforts and maintain regional harmony, said the statement, in an implied yet obvious reference to the escalated tension in the region following rising lingering hostility between Iran and the United States. PM Sharif conveyed his “warm regards to Amir of the State of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani,” said the official handout.

The PM, it said, is looking forward to the Qatari Amir’s upcoming visit to Pakistan.
