Digital parking system in Lahore: Punjab govt launches pilot project

LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced the launch of a pilot project for a digital parking system in the provincial capital; this initiative will be implemented in four busy commercial areas of Lahore: M M Alam Road, Liberty Market, Mall One, and Ittefaq Hospital.

During a meeting held on Friday, chaired by Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique, discussions took place regarding the project’s details. Special Secretary Arshad Baig and Lahore Parking Company (Le-Park) CEO Naveed Virk also attended the meeting.

The Minister emphasised the urgent need for reforms in Lahore’s parking system due to the increasing traffic congestion. “With the digital parking system, parking fees can be paid via a mobile app,” he said. He explained that parking fees will be directly transferred to the account of the Lahore Parking Company through a QR code, which will help eliminate complaints of overcharging and improve traffic management.

He noted that Zindgi, an IT company, has offered to provide free services for the digital parking system and the local government will consider this proposal, but the final decision will rest with the Punjab Chief Minister. The team is currently studying successful models from around the world for implementing digital parking systems. In the next phase, it is also planned to link digital parking facilities with the Safe Cities Authority.

During the meeting, CEO Naveed Virk informed attendees that a specialised dashboard for digital parking will be created within Le-Park. He added that, in alignment with the Chief Minister’s vision, significant reforms are being implemented in Lahore’s parking system, with several initiatives currently in development.
