Push to speed up projects: P3A overhaul gets PM’s approval

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday granted in-principle approval to further streamline the Public-Private Partnership Authority (P3A) and its related system to speed up development projects through public-private partnerships in the country.

A high-level meeting chaired by the prime minister to accelerate development projects in the country through Public-Private Partnerships, it was decided that, in order to align P3A’s performance with modern requirements and to accelerate development projects under public-private partnerships, the authority will operate under the Privatization Division.

The PM directed that the capacity of relevant ministries and departments be improved with regard to initiating development projects through public-private partnerships.

He further instructed that development projects carried out through public-private partnerships be made part of the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of ministries and departments.

“We are making the public-private partnership system more transparent and efficient through P3A,” he added. The meeting was presented with a comparison of public-private partnership models implemented in various countries at the regional and global levels. The meeting was also briefed on the features of the proposed new system.

Under the new system, P3A will be overseen by the Cabinet Committee on Privatization and the Privatization Division.

The prime minister directed that progress on the implementation of the newly-approved system be expedited. The meeting was attended by Minister for Climate Change Musadik Malik, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Cheema, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Planning and Development Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Advisor to the Prime Minister on privatisation Muhammad Ali, and State Minister for Finance Bilal Azhar Kayani, and other senior officials.
