KARACHI: As inflation tightens its grip on household budgets and the financial strain of education mounts on struggling families, Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Chief Monem Zafar on Friday inaugurated a three-day ‘Parho Parhao’ book exchange camp in the megacity, appealing for financial support and donations of school bags to ensure no child remains deprived of learning.

The initiative, which has drawn a strong public response, aims to ease the burden of rising education costs by providing primary and secondary-level textbooks free of charge through community exchange. Alongside the book distribution, organisers have arranged subsidised stalls and daily prize draws to support families facing the dual pressures of inflation and school expenses.

Several camps have already been set up in multiple districts, with the primary facilities inaugurated at Liaquatabad and another visited by Monem Zafar at UP Mor in North Karachi. At the Liaquatabad camp specifically, organisers have structured daily prize draws to distribute free school bags, while a separate subsidised stall is offering school shoes at affordable rates to lessen the financial load on parents.

Speaking to the media during the inauguration, the JI leader highlighted the deteriorating state of public education in Sindh, particularly in Karachi, describing it as a reflection of administrative failure. He criticised the provincial government for limiting reforms to “paper claims” while many public schools remained in poor physical condition.

“Education is the foundation of any nation’s progress. Without providing quality education to our children, we cannot build a strong and self-reliant society,” the JI Karachi Chief said. He emphasised that the ‘Parho Parhao’ campaign was designed to ensure access to education for every child, regardless of their financial background.

Recognising that community effort is essential to the drive’s success, Zafar issued an urgent appeal to philanthropists across Karachi. He urged citizens to contribute by donating used or new textbooks, school bags, or financial assistance to keep the camps operational. “This is an investment in the future of our next generation.”
