KARACHI: The Sindh government on Tuesday called for urgent federal intervention to address a worsening gas supply crisis, particularly in Karachi, where unannounced outages during designated meal hours are disrupting daily life.

In a statement, provincial government’s Spokesperson Sukhdev Hemnani said gas supply is being suspended without prior notice, even during limited hours allocated for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

“This is a serious lapse in service delivery and is unacceptable,” he said, adding that households across the province are struggling to cook meals and are being forced to rely on costly alternatives.

Hemnani said the situation has placed an additional financial burden on inflation-hit families, with many turning to expensive fuels to meet basic needs.

He noted that the crisis extends beyond urban centres, highlighting that gas-producing districts such as Ghotki and Shikarpur continue to face low gas pressure and unannounced load-shedding despite contributing significantly to the country’s natural gas production.

The continued lack of reliable supply in these areas has deepened a sense of deprivation among local communities, he added.

Referring to claims by Sui Southern Gas Company that supply is being maintained during meal times, Hemnani said the ground reality reflects otherwise, calling the gap between official statements and public experience “unacceptable.”

Emphasizing that gas allocation and distribution fall under federal jurisdiction, he urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and relevant authorities to take immediate corrective measures.

He called for a transparent supply schedule and an end to unannounced outages, particularly during essential meal hours, to provide relief to citizens throughout the province.
