KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Chief Monem Zafar on Friday strongly condemned what he termed a “fascist attack” on opposition members during a City Council session.
Zafar described the incident as an “open hostility towards democracy and a reflection of the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) political mindset.”
The attack on opposition members during the council meeting is intolerable and constitutes a direct assault on democratic values,” he said. “The sanctity of the house has been violated.”
The JI leader alleged that the mayor was attempting to bulldoze the opinions of elected representatives and force through “hand-picked resolutions.” He characterised the conduct of the ruling party as entirely authoritarian, claiming the party seeks to trample democratic principles to impose decisions of its own choosing.
He further claimed a systematic conspiracy is under way to maintain control over Karachi’s financial resources, thereby depriving the megacity’s residents of their rightful share. He warned; however, that such “fascist behaviour” would not last long. “The public will soon reject this style of governance.”
He said that the JI would continue to raise its voice on every forum to secure Karachi’s legitimate rights and would not bow to political pressure or tactics.
He demanded a transparent and immediate inquiry into the commotion witnessed in the Council Hall. He called for swift action against those responsible to prevent the recurrence of such events in the future.
