LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Thursday extended the stay order against construction work at Sheranwala and Taxsali gates in Lahore and adjourned proceedings in petitions concerning environmental issues till April 16.

During the hearing, the court observed that it was necessary to adopt proposals put forward by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) to help reduce pollution in the country.

The court also directed the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) to appoint a tree officer to prevent the cutting of trees in the city.

Expressing dissatisfaction over the performance of the forest department, the court observed that the department could not be allowed to work jointly with the PHA. It further remarked that the PHA should be strengthened in its own capacity to help decrease pollution levels in the city.

The court also restrained the PHA Gujranwala from using public gardens for commercial purposes and emphasized that market closing timings in the city should be implemented strictly. Subsequently, the court adjourned further proceedings till April 16.
