ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Constitutional Court of Turkiye signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Monday to enhance judicial cooperation between the two countries.
The agreement was signed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Yahya Afridi and President of the Constitutional Court of Turkiye Kadir Ozkaya at a ceremony at the Supreme Court.
Ozkaya led a high-level delegation of judges and senior officials visiting Pakistan as state guests. The delegation was received by Chief Justice Afridi upon arrival at the Supreme Court.
Speaking at the event, Chief Justice Afridi highlighted the significance of institutional links between the two courts, noting that such exchanges “play a vital role in enhancing efficiency, accessibility, and transparency in the administration of justice.”
President Ozkaya thanked Pakistan for its hospitality and underscored the importance of sustained judicial dialogue, knowledge sharing, and institutional collaboration.
According to the Supreme Court, the MoU provides a framework for cooperation in areas including judicial exchanges, professional training, capacity building, and the sharing of best practices.
It will particularly focus on developing the skills of the judiciary at the district level through joint training programmes, academic exchanges, and comparative studies of judicial practice.
The agreement also aims to modernise judicial processes through the adoption of digital technologies, including e-courts, and to foster joint research initiatives and the exchange of legal knowledge. A Joint Working Group will be set up to oversee its implementation.
As a symbolic gesture of goodwill, the Turkish delegation planted a sapling at the Supreme Court, signalling a shared commitment to sustainability and bilateral partnership.
The ceremony was attended by senior members of the judiciary, including judges of the Federal Constitutional Court, chief justices of all high courts, including those of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, alongside the Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Azam Nazeer Tarar, Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Awan, and representatives from the legal community.
