KARACHI: Chairperson of the Sindh Commission on Status of Women, Advocate Rubina Aman Brohi met Executive Director of SZABIST-ZABTech to explore collaboration for expanding technical and vocational education opportunities for girls across Sindh.
The meeting focused on improving access to skills-based education, particularly in underserved rural areas, where barriers such as poor infrastructure, limited transport and restricted mobility continue to hinder girls’ access to secondary and higher education.
Ms Brohi shared findings from her recent field visits to Shaheed Benazirabad and Umerkot, conducted as part of an awareness campaign on legal rights, where she said many girls expressed strong interest in technical education as a pathway to economic independence. “We observed a clear demand for skills training among girls in these communities, despite the challenges they face in accessing formal education,” she said.
Ms Waheeda Mahesar, Executive Director of SZABIST-ZABTech, outlined the institution’s plans to expand training programmes and express interest in partnering with the Sindh Commission on the Status of Women and the Provincial Women Development Department to address gaps in access to vocational education.
Member of Sindh Assembly Qasim Soomro, who also attended the meeting, welcomed the initiative and stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to tackle educational disparities and promote women’s empowerment.
The proposed collaboration aims to equip girls with market-relevant skills and improve economic opportunities, particularly in rural and marginalised communities across the province.
