There is no doubt about the fact that the country’s first elected prime minister, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto who, in the words of PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, “was the architect of a Pakistan where power rests with the people and where the sun of hope rises each day from the hearts of the deprived”. In his message that he issued on the occasion of death anniversary of the PPP founder, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also pointed out that “Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto stands as a towering and multidimensional statesman in history, who reshaped Pakistan’s political and social course”.
In my view, the PPP chairman is spot on. But he will always be required by the nation to preserve and protect the Bhutto legacy in a manner that does justice to the originator. No doubt, Bhutto left many things that are and will be lovingly valued and treasured by all his party men and women across the country. Bhutto’s greatest legacy was the country’s constitution of 1973, which is not merely a symbolic document, but a living, enforceable framework. Therefore, there is the need for reaffirming on the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto our commitment that the constitution of Pakistan will always be defended against erosion or arbitrary alteration by those in power.
