ISLAMABAD: In a strong show of commitment to environmental sustainability, Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq led Pakistan’s participation in Earth Hour 2026 by announcing a lights-off observance at Parliament House and calling for collective action against climate change.

The ceremony, held on Saturday evening outside Parliament House on the Speaker’s directive, marked the global campaign aimed at raising awareness about environmental protection. As part of the initiative, lights at Parliament House will be switched off from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm in line with worldwide observances.

Addressing the event, the Speaker emphasized that Earth Hour is not merely a symbolic gesture but a reaffirmation of a shared commitment to protect the planet. He noted that energy conservation measures are already being strictly implemented within Parliament.

Sardar Ayaz Sadiq highlighted that even small individual actions can lead to significant and lasting environmental impact when adopted collectively. He warned that Pakistan continues to face serious challenges due to climate change, underscoring the urgent need for comprehensive policy making and effective implementation.

He further stressed that timely action is essential to ensure a safe and stable future for coming generations, adding that reducing air pollution and harmful emissions has become a pressing necessity. Promoting sustainable use of natural resources and adopting environmentally friendly practices in daily life are crucial steps forward, he said.

Calling environmental protection a shared responsibility across all segments of society, the Speaker urged citizens to treat Earth Hour not just as a one-hour activity but as an ongoing commitment.

He also appreciated the efforts of World Wide Fund for Nature for its environmental awareness campaigns, noting their role in mobilizing public support for a greener, cleaner, and more prosperous Pakistan.
