KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday inspected several storm-water drains across the city as part of the efforts to mitigate urban flooding risks ahead of the expected monsoon season.
Accompanied by Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jaffer, Senior Director Municipal Services Iqbal Nawaz and other officials, Wahab visited key drainage sites including PIDCL,
Hijrat Colony and Zehri nullahs to review ongoing desilting and maintenance work.
Karachi Mayor said, “We have launched large-scale cleaning of drains across the city and will also take action against those dumping waste into them.” He said authorities were establishing an effective monitoring system at known choking points, drawing on lessons from previous years when heavy rains led to widespread urban flooding.
Wahab noted that water flow in major drains was currently improving and expressed confidence in the city administration’s preparedness to handle upcoming rainfall challenges. In addition to drain clearance, City Wardens have set up rain relief camps to assist residents during adverse weather conditions, he said.
“I am personally overseeing the situation. The city’s leadership stands with its citizens, and the municipal teams will remain on the ground,” Wahab reassured.
Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city faces recurring flooding during the monsoon season due to inadequate drainage infrastructure, encroachments and solid waste accumulation.
