Lahore Qalandars face Kingsmen as PSL 11 opens in empty stadiums

The 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League gets under way tonight (Thursday), with defending champions Lahore Qalandars taking on debutants Kingsmen Hyderabad at Gaddafi Stadium.
The milestone season, expanded to eight teams for the first time, will be staged exclusively in Lahore and Karachi.
However, matches will be played behind closed doors following a decision by the Pakistan Cricket Board under government austerity measures.

The Qalandars, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi, enter the tournament with strong momentum, having secured three titles in the last four editions.
Their formidable pace trio of Afridi, Haris Rauf and Mustafizur Rahman remains a key strength.
In the batting department, Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique provide stability at the top, while all-rounder Sikandar Raza adds depth and versatility.
The Kingsmen, owned by US-based businessman Fawad Sarwar, mark their PSL debut with a high-profile squad led by Marnus Labuschagne. The line-up includes Glenn Maxwell, Riley Meredith, Kusal Perera and record signing Saim Ayub.
While their batting appears formidable, the Kingsmen face concerns over their pace attack following the withdrawal of South African fast bowler Ottneil Baartman, leaving Meredith as their only overseas specialist quick.
The opening fixture sets up a contrast between an established, title-winning unit and a new franchise aiming to make an immediate impact.

Conditions at Gaddafi Stadium are expected to favour batsmen, although early movement for fast bowlers and some assistance for spinners later in the innings could come into play. Chasing sides have historically held an advantage at the venue, making the toss a potentially decisive factor.
Weather conditions are forecast to remain clear, with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 28°C.
The tournament’s revised schedule, limited to two venues, marks a departure from earlier plans that included matches in Multan, Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said the decision was finalised after consultations with stakeholders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Despite the absence of spectators, PSL 11 begins with high expectations as the Qalandars look to extend their dominance and the Kingsmen seek a winning start to their campaign.
