RAWALPINDI: A new medical team on Wednesday conducted a medical examination of incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan at Adiala jail following the direction of Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Sources said that a medical team comprising ENT specialist Professor Altaf Hussain, cardiologist Professor Akhtar Ali Bandesha, Dr Muhammad Ali Arif, and Professor Nadeem Qureshi of Al-Shifa Eye Hospital conducted the medical check-up.

Sources said the team was assisted by the jail hospital’s medical staff during the examination. The doctors will compile a report and submit it to the Chief Commissioner of Islamabad.

The report will also include recommendations on whether Khan should be moved to Shifa Hospital or continue receiving treatment within the jail facility.

Last week, the IHC directed the Chief Commissioner of Islamabad to constitute a medical board to assess the health condition of Khan and rejected a petition seeking his transfer to a private hospital.

The petition had requested Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital, Islamabad for eye treatment and was heard by a division bench comprising Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir and Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro.

In a three-page order, the court instructed the medical board to submit its recommendations to the Chief Commissioner at the earliest.

Based on the board’s report, the chief commissioner will decide, in accordance with the law and relevant prison rules whether Khan should be moved outside the prison or continue receiving treatment within the jail.
