LAHORE: Warning about the continuously increasing temperature in the province and a further rise in the coming days, the Punjab Agriculture Department (PAD) has advised wheat growers in rain-fed (Barani) areas to utilise all available irrigation sources according to the crop’s requirements.
In an advisory issued here on Wednesday, the spokesperson of the department said that in addition to irrigation, farmers should also spray a 2 percent solution of urea or potassium nitrate (saltpeter) at the rate of 100 to 120 liters per acre. For better results, the same spray should be repeated after an interval of seven days. Farmers cultivating rain-fed wheat are also advised to regularly inspect their crops. In case of a rust disease attack, only the affected area should be sprayed with an appropriate fungicide in consultation with local agricultural experts of the Agriculture Department Punjab.
The spokesperson for the Agriculture Department Punjab further stated that wheat growers in irrigated areas should ensure the judicious use of irrigation resources in case of the non-availability of canal water.
