LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Local Government Zeeshan Rafiq said on Monday that a pilot bio-CNG plant, a self-funding circular economy project, has started production at the Lakhoder landfill site near Lahore.
Expressing satisfaction over the project’s smooth functioning, he said “waste-to-value” is an important phase of the Suthra Punjab programme under which thousands of tons of collected waste will be utilised for energy generation.
Chairing a meeting at the Civil Secretariat, the minister reviewed progress on the waste-to-value phase of the programme. Secretary Local Government Shakeel Ahmed Mian and Director General Suthra Punjab Authority Babar Sahib Din also attended the meeting.
The minister said the plant is currently producing around 85 kg of CNG daily from waste, adding that the methane gas concentration will be increased from 70 percent to 85 percent.
He said high-quality gas was produced from one ton of waste during the pilot phase, adding that the project is being run as a self-funding circular economy solution.
Work on other waste-to-energy initiatives is also underway, he added. The minister said several local and foreign companies have shown interest in the waste-to-value programme.
