KARACHI: The liaison office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Karachi hosted an interfaith and intercultural diplomatic Iftar dinner at the State Guest House here. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic community, business leaders, journalists, religious scholars, intellectuals and civil society representatives.
The event aimed to highlight the message of Ramazan, promote interfaith harmony and cultural dialogue, and present Pakistan’s role at the global level.
Addressing the gathering, Director General of the Foreign Liaison Office Karachi, Muhammad Irfan Soomro, said the current global landscape is marked by uncertainty, regional conflicts, rising extremism, and social divisions. He emphasized that dialogue, tolerance, and mutual respect are essential for peace. He said that representatives of different faiths and cultures coming together at one table send a message that cooperation and peaceful coexistence are possible despite differences.
Referring to the August 11, 1947 address of Pakistan’s Founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, he stated that Pakistan was founded on the principles of religious freedom, equality, and state neutrality, which continue to guide the country’s domestic and foreign policies. He also highlighted the teachings of Sufi saints of Sindh, particularly Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, whose message of humanity and goodwill remains relevant.
Speakers noted that Ramadan is a month of patience, sacrifice, compassion, self-accountability, and social responsibility, values that contribute to balance and justice in international relations.
During the Iftar, participants discussed bilateral relations, trade and investment opportunities, cultural exchanges, and the role of media in projecting Pakistan’s image globally. The presence of the journalist community was described as important in promoting Pakistan’s narrative internationally.
On the occasion, artist Hameed Soomro presented a painting to Director General Muhammad Irfan Soomro as a gesture of cultural expression.
Diplomatic circles observed that such gatherings help bridge gaps between different faiths and civilizations while reinforcing Karachi’s significance and Pakistan’s statecraft.
The event concluded with participants reiterating their commitment to promoting peace, tolerance, dialogue, and mutual respect.
Deputy DG Sadia Gohar Khanum, Assistant to DG Maryum, and other officials were also present.
