KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar has directed that drone surveillance be utilised in potentially sensitive areas of Karachi when required, and ordered the establishment of a dedicated Drone Surveillance Unit for this purpose.

He emphasised that further upgrading of the Special Branch is the need of the hour. He stated that the Special Branch would be assigned a frontline role in counterterrorism efforts and would be strengthened and modernised in line with contemporary requirements.

Presiding over a review meeting on the overall law and order situation in the province held at the Central Police Office Karachi, he directed that Intelligence Reports (IRs) related to border areas be made purposeful and effective to ensure peace and stability. He emphasised that proactive strategies should be developed on the basis of these reports to counter potential threats.

The meeting was attended by senior police and security officials, including IGP Sindh Javed Alam Odho. During the meeting, the IGP Sindh briefed the Home Minister in detail on the current security situation, potential threats, and ongoing measures.

The comprehensive security plan and preventive strategies were thoroughly reviewed.

The minister further instructed that a coordinated and comprehensive strategy be formulated to curb banned organisations, sectarianism, and militancy.

Security of all key locations, including sensitive installations, must be ensured at an extraordinary level. Keeping in view possible terrorist threats, the home minister stressed the need to fully secure entry and exit points and to ensure foolproof security of mosques, madrasas, and imambargahs in consultation with their respective administrations.

He directed officers not to remain confined to their offices but to ensure their presence in the field and actively discharge their responsibilities. Instructions were also issued to intensify intelligence-based operations, snap checking, picketing, reconnaissance monitoring, patrolling, and checkpoint systems.

Lanjar ordered a comprehensive security audit of important and sensitive installations and directed that detailed recommendations regarding the resource requirements of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) be submitted. These recommendations should include drones, modern vehicles, explosive detectors, and other advanced equipment.
