Muttahida Qaumi Movement – Pakistan (MQM-P) has issued a clarification, stating that recent media reports misrepresented remarks made by Dr Farooq Sattar, creating a false impression that the gas-based generation plant installed on the rooftop of Gul Plaza was associated with or managed by K-Electric.
According to a statement released on Wednesday, MQM-P clarified that Sattar had categorically stated that the gas generator installed at Gul Plaza has no connection with KE in terms of installation, operations, or administration.
As per the clarification, the license for the generator was issued by the Sindh Energy Department, while the responsibility for monthly inspections rests with the Electrical Inspector, operating under the Government of Sindh.
MQM-P alleged that these inspections were not carried out properly in recent years, and this negligence apparently led to the unfortunate fire incident at Gul Plaza, resulting in the tragic loss of precious lives.
Sattar has demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate what he termed as serious negligence and to determine accountability.
MQM-P emphasised that accurate facts must be presented to the public to avoid confusion and ensure that no misleading impressions persist regarding the incident.
Last month, a major fire broke out at the Gul Plaza shopping centre on Muhammad Ali Jinnah Road in Karachi. The blaze spread rapidly through the multistory commercial building, resulting in 80 casualties, numerous injuries and extensive damage.
