LAHORE: The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Lahore and the Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the preservation, restoration, and reuse of the historic steam pump house located in Badami Bagh.
This significant building is an important part of the British-era water system and is also connected to Lahore’s ancient water supply system in the walled city.
WASA Lahore Managing Director Ghufran Ahmed and WCLA Director General Najam Al-Saqib signed a MoU. The architectural and structural restoration of the historic pump house will be undertaken, as highlighted by Najam Al-Saqib. The agreement aims to preserve the historical and functional relationship between the building and the Pani Wala pond.
On this occasion, the WASA MD said that the MoU will be effective for a period of 10 years, enabling the building to be transformed into a museum, exhibition centre, or cultural venue in a heritage-friendly manner. A coordinated strategy will be established for the long-term conservation, operation, and maintenance of the site, he added.
To facilitate the transfer of operational control to the Authority, he said that all necessary legal and administrative steps should be completed promptly. He instructed officers to ensure that complete monitoring occurs to prevent any disruption to WASA’s operations during the restoration process. According to him, both organisations are to nominate focal persons to maintain the pace and transparency of the work. Ownership of the pump building will remain with WASA Lahore. In light of its historical significance, any construction activities must be conducted under the supervision of experts.
Ahmed emphasised that the WASA is committed to providing modern drainage and water services to Lahore while also preserving its historical assets. He described this initiative as a significant step towards safeguarding Lahore’s cultural heritage.
