Incarcerated PTI leadership calls for postponement of protests during Ramadan

  • Says TTAP should focus on parliamentary role instead of street agitation during holy month

Senior leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) currently held at Kot Lakhpat Jail have urged the party to defer all protest activities in observance of the sanctity of Ramadan, Aaj News reported.

In a joint letter sent to the media, sources said, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhary, Omar Sarfaraz Cheema, and Mian Mahmood-ur-Rashid condemned President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent remarks concerning Imran Khan, stating that the party founder was enduring his imprisonment with dignity.

In the letter, the imprisoned leaders also demanded that the government cease politicising PTI founding chairman Imran’s health and complete all stages of his medical treatment by taking his sisters and personal physicians into confidence.

The leaders also maintained that the Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aaeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) should focus on its parliamentary role instead of street agitation during the holy month.

They also directed party officials at all levels to reorganise the party and make it active at the grassroots level. The letter emphasised that the organisational structure should be strengthened and workers mobilised in preparation for local government elections across the country.

Expressing concern over rising terrorism, inflation, and unemployment, the leaders added that issues such as the high number of out-of-school children and corruption must be highlighted to effectively bring public grievances to the forefront.
