ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is likely to attend the inaugural meeting of US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace, scheduled for 19 February in Washington, DC, sources said on Tuesday.
As no official announcement has been made, sources said the decision on whether Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif or Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will attend the moot is still awaited.
Pakistan has been invited to the meeting, which will focus on addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
Key topics are expected to include efforts to sustain the ceasefire, facilitate humanitarian access, and outline a roadmap for the reconstruction of post-conflict Gaza. Pakistan’s participation in the summit is seen as part of its broader diplomatic strategy to contribute to regional peace and advocate for a swift and just resolution to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Islamabad has consistently called for an immediate ceasefire, unimpeded humanitarian assistance, and a political process based on international law and United Nations resolutions.
Pakistan will reaffirm its support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders, with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.
Pakistan became a member of the US-led Board of Peace last month at a ceremony held during the World Economic Forum in Davos. The initiative, launched by President Trump last year, initially focused on Gaza’s reconstruction following the Israel-Hamas conflict, but has since expanded to address other conflict-affected regions.
The February 19 inaugural meeting in Washington will also aim to mobilise funding for Gaza’s reconstruction.
More than 20 countries, including Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Turkiye, Qatar, the UAE, Indonesia, Argentina, and Hungary, are members of the Board of Peace.
