ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to UNESCO’s core values of advancing inclusive and quality education, preserving cultural heritage, and building resilience in the face of global challenges.

Speaking to Dr Khaled El-Enany, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), who called on him, the Prime Minister commended the vital work being carried out by UNESCO.

The prime minister expressed Pakistan’s eagerness to continue collaborating with the organisation, particularly under Dr El-Enany’s leadership.

He highlighted the government’s ongoing initiatives to improve education, including the “Education Emergency” programme aimed at increasing the enrolment of out-of-school children.

He also shared his experiences and the successful track record in the education sector during his tenure as Chief Minister of Punjab, emphasising the importance of innovative solutions to tackling education challenges.

During the meeting, PM Sharif expressed satisfaction with UNESCO’s support in the protection and preservation of six cultural heritage sites in Pakistan.

He invited UNESCO to collaborate with Pakistan to enlist additional sites, including the iconic Khewra Salt Mines, for protection under the organisation’s global heritage initiative.

Dr El-Enany thanked the prime minister for the warm reception and shared his experiences visiting various schools and cultural sites during his brief visit to Pakistan.

He lauded Pakistan’s achievements in the education sector and reaffirmed UNESCO’s commitment to supporting the country’s efforts in education, science, and culture.

The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Minister for Science and Technology Khalid Hussain Magsi, Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khichi, along with senior officials.
