LAHORE: An enforcement team of Punjab Food Authority conducted an early morning crackdown at Tollinton Market on Saturday and inspected 63,000 kg meat out of which 6,750 kg of sick poultry and meat was discarded.

Veterinary specialists carried out a detailed examination of the recovered birds which were found suffering from flu, underweight condition and various diseases. Food safety team inspected 50 meat shops and suppliers and imposed heavy fines over violations.

Director General PFA Asim Javaid said that modern SOPs in line with international standards have been formulated to ensure meat quality. He said that the use of aprons, head covers, masks and gloves by workers during operations is mandatory. He further stated that Punjab Food Authority teams inspect Tollinton Market in three shifts daily and there will be no compromise on meat quality. No leniency will be shown towards violators.

DG PFA directed suppliers to provide healthy chicken as per SOPs and warned that strict action would be taken over violations. He said that operations against health-adulterating elements are continuing day and night on the orders of the Chief Minister Punjab.

He has requested the public to support the PFA in eliminating the adulteration mafia and report to the PFA on its 1223 helpline number in case of any complaints.
