The Sindh School Education Department has announced an extension of the adjusted school timings across the province in response to the ongoing cold wave.

Under the extended directive, all educational institutions will continue to commence classes at 9:00 AM. This schedule will remain in effect until February 4, ensuring the safety and well-being of students.

The department clarified that this decision applies uniformly to all government and private schools throughout Sindh.

“In continuation of this department’s notification of even number dated January 10, 2026, the timing of all public and private educational institutions under the administrative control of School Education & Literacy Department, Government of Sindh, shall continue till February 4, 2026,” read the notification issued by the School Education & Literacy Department.

Following a consultation between Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah and Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, the provincial government on January 10 announced a change in timings of schools and other educational institutes due to the intensifying cold wave.

The adjustment was aimed to protect students from the severe early morning temperatures while ensuring educational activities continue.

A notification had been issued to implement those changes, prioritising the health and safety of students during the winter spell.

The extension in the adjusted school timing has been announced a day after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a forecast indicating that temperatures in Karachi could drop to single digits through Monday.

Furthermore, following a second spell of winter showers on Thursday, the metropolis is expected to remain cold and dry with occasional winds till January end, said Meteorologist Anjum Nazir Zaighum on Saturday.

According to the PMD, the minimum temperature on Saturday was forecast at 8.5°C, with a further dip expected on Sunday to between 7°C and 9°C. By Monday night, the mercury is forecasted to rise slightly to the 8–10°C range.

Daytime temperatures are expected to remain relatively cool, staying between 19°C and 21°C through Sunday before reaching 20°C to 22°C on Monday.

The current cold wave follows a westerly wave that brought light to moderate rainfall and strong winds to the city earlier this week, significantly dropping the wind chill.
