PESHAWAR: Five police personnel including a Station House Officer (SHO) were martyred in a blast in Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday when an improvised explosive device (IED) targeted police armoured vehicle, the local police said.

“Five policemen were martyred in the IED blast,” said a statement from the Tank police spokesperson, adding that their armoured personnel carrier (APC) was targeted within the jurisdiction of the Gomal police station.

“The blast occurred while the APC was on its way to Tank from the Gomal police station,” the statement added.

The martyred included a Station House Officer (SHO), the police spokesperson said. Rescue 1122 shifted the bodies to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Tank.Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has condemned the martyrdom of the five police personnel including an SHO. He termed the incident highly sorrowful and added that the sacrifices of the police personnel will not go in waste.

He further said that the enemies of peace will not succeed in their nefarious designs through making attacks on police force. He said that police is rendering sacrifices as frontline force in the war against terrorism and vowed to bring the infiltrator into the justice.

President Asif Ali Zardari also expressed his deep grief over the martyrdom of police personnel in the “terrorist attack,” a statement from his office said.

The president prayed for the martyrs’ elevated ranks and for patience for their families.

KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi also condemned the terrorist attack and has sought an immediate report from the top police officials regarding the incident.

He expressed his deep grief and anger, conveying his condolences to the bereaved families of the martyrs. The KP governor urged the PTI-run provincial government to “take practical steps to ensure peace in the province.”
