ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday welcomed Australia’s increasing interest in Pakistan’s mining sector, framing the high-stakes Reko-Diq project as a key opportunity for both nations to benefit financially and strategically.
Talking to Tim Kane, Australia’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Pakistan, who had paid a courtesy call on him, PM Sharif emphasised Islamabad’s readiness to capitalise on the growing potential in the mining and minerals industries, as well as, other sectors, to strengthen economic ties. “I welcome Australian interest in the mining and minerals sector, with Reko-Diq serving as a shining example of the immense potential this sector holds in Pakistan.”
The prime minister highlighted the upward trajectory of Pakistan-Australia relations, noting opportunities in agriculture, livestock, and trade. “Pakistan is ready for business,” he said, underlining the country’s desire to attract Australian investment in these sectors.

The tone of the meeting shifted as PM Sharif expressed Pakistan’s condolences for the tragic terrorist attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney on 14 December, which claimed innocent lives.
He condemned the attack as a “despicable and cowardly act,” offering Pakistan’s full support to Australia in its time of sorrow. “Terrorism has no religion, no boundaries,” Sharif stated, urging a united international effort to eliminate such violence. “Collective action is crucial to root out this menace.”
While much of the conversation focused on strengthening relations, the shared passion for cricket between the two nations was also acknowledged, with PM Sharif noting the cultural bonds that tie the people of Pakistan and Australia together.
However, both parties made it clear that they aim to move beyond sport, focusing on more substantive political and economic collaboration.
PM Sharif also congratulated Ambassador Kane on his appointment, expressing confidence that his tenure would further bolster the long-standing, friendly relations between the two nations.
He also highlighted the vital role played by Pakistan’s Diaspora in Australia, describing them as a bridge between the two countries.
