KARACHI: Karachi administration has finalised arrangements for the polio eradication campaign, starting from Dec 21. More than 2.1 million children will receive polio drops and 26,000 polio workers will perform their duties.

Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi has said the city administration, together with the EOC, the Health Department, UNICEF and other international organisations, has planned the campaign to ensure effective implementation and meet targets fixed.

According to statement issued by the Commissioner House, it has been decided that all institutions will make coordinated efforts to achieve the target. Various measures have been taken to strengthen the role of polio workers and motivate them.

In this regard, UNICEF and the Health Department have conducted and completed a special training programme to enhance polio workers’ and area inchares

Assistant Commissioners have been asked to coordinate and guid the polio workers and area incharges in their duties to get support of parents and the community, and secure cooperation to get children vaccinated.

A training programme organised by the EOC, district administration jointly for area incharges was held last week at Sachal Goth, Sohrab Goth Town, attended by area incharges from various districts who received special training on securing parental cooperation, especially parents of children missed and refused .

The Commissioner also inspected the training and praised the efforts, noting that the administration is implementing several initiatives to encourage polio workers.

In the campaign starting Monday, Deputy Commissioner Central Taha Saleem has arranged meals and transport /shuttle service for polio workers in District Central with the support of the Saylani Welfare, Daudi Bohra Community, town officials and UC chairmen. Other DCs have been directed to follow the steps taken by DC central Taha Saleem.

The Commissioner added that the anti polio campaign will focus on children who have missed or their parents refused vaccination.

Special support teams comprising town and union council chairmen and officials from various departments have been formed to ensure coverage of these children and to secure the cooperation of local dignitaries and parents.
