ISLAMABAD: The embattled opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Friday announced formation of a new 23-member political committee, including representatives from its allied parties, in an effort to regain political momentum amid ongoing challenges.
The formation of the new panel follows directives from party founding chairman, who reportedly ordered the dissolution of the previous committee last week and called for a new team to navigate the ongoing political turmoil.
Key members of the new committee include PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, and senior leaders Firdous Shamim Naqvi, Sheikh Waqas Akram, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
Also included are Allama Raja Nasir Abbas of Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM), a PTI ally and the party’s nominee for opposition leader in the Senate, and Mehmood Khan Achakzai of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP), another ally, who is PTI’s pick for opposition leader in the National Assembly.
Other prominent leaders within the committee include Shibli Faraz, former opposition leader in the Senate, former opposition leader in the National Assembly Omar Ayub Khan, Junaid Akber Khan, PTI KP president, Moeen Qureshi, the PTI’s opposition leader in the Punjab Assembly, Sajjad Burki, who heads PTI’s international chapter, and Malik Ahmad Khan Bhachar.
Additionally, Aliya Hamza, Haleem Adil Sheikh, Dawood Kakar, and Khalid Khurshid have been named to the team, along with Sardar Qayum Niazi from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Asad Qaiser, Amir Dogar, Fauzia Arshad, Kanwal Shauzab, and Lal Chand Malhi.
In a statement, PTI confirmed that the newly formed committee would play a central role in the party’s decision-making processes, including overseeing the operations of provincial wings and sub-committees.
The party also revealed plans to establish sub-committees with specific areas of expertise, drawing on the extensive experience of senior party members.
“Sub-committees with relevant expertise will be formed, with individuals selected based on their experience and role within the party,” the notification read, suggesting that further changes in the leadership structure could follow.
The restructuring signals PTI’s intention to adopt a more inclusive approach and broaden its base. The formation of these new bodies is expected to improve the party’s internal workings and contribute to a more comprehensive political strategy.
It is pertinent to note that the names of former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Ali Amin Gandapur, PTI activist Shehbaz Gill, currently based in the United States, and several others are notably absent from the newly formed political panel lists.
