ISLAMABAD: Sudan has sought Pakistan’s cooperation in the rehabilitation and reconstruction of its health sector.
The request was formally made by a high-level Sudanese delegation led by Dr Ali Babikir Seid Ahmed Mohamed, the Secretary General of Sudan’s National Medicines and Poisons Board, during his meeting with the Federal Minister for National Health Services and Regulations, Syed Mustafa Kamal, here on Monday.
During the meeting, the Sudanese side also requested Pakistan to provide Sudan with medical equipment and technologies, restoration of solar energy solutions for health facilities, and enhancement of institutional collaboration.
Kamal assured that Pakistan will continue to extend comprehensive support to Sudan in emergency response, recovery, capacity building, and the development of long-term partnerships in the health sector.
Discussions focused on collaboration in the health, pharmaceuticals, and medical technology sectors, with both sides exploring avenues for joint ventures, knowledge exchange, and strengthening bilateral economic ties.
The Sudanese delegation was also included Ambassador of Sudan to Pakistan Salih Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed Siddig, Dr Badreldin Mohamed Ahmed El-Gozoli, Director General, Medical Supplies Fund, Dr Hayder Mohamed Abdel-Nabi, Director, Hospitals Department, Federal Health Ministry Mohamed Marwan Awad, Head of Executive Office, Undersecretary of the Federal Health Ministry Hatim Motasim Mohamed Ali, Representative, Economic Security.
The meeting was also attended by Pakistan’s Federal Secretary of Health, Hamid Yaqoob, along with senior officials from the Ministry of National Health Services.
The Minister reaffirmed that Pakistan attaches great importance to its brotherly relations with Sudan and highly values Sudan’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Pakistan in the health sector. He appreciated the constructive engagement of the Sudanese delegation and underscored Pakistan’s commitment to expand collaboration across multiple areas of healthcare.
The Sudanese delegation briefed the federal minister on the current challenges being faced by Sudan’s health sector and shared details of a comprehensive five-year strategic framework developed by Sudan, encompassing approximately 45 health-related projects.
The Sudanese delegation also expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s continued support and conveyed confidence that the visit would pave the way for improved coordination and a more effective partnership between the two countries. Reiterating Pakistan’s resolve, Kamal emphasised that Pakistan remains fully committed to further strengthening health-sector cooperation with Sudan. He stated that Pakistan is ready to support the training of Sudanese medical personnel, facilitate the exchange of experts, and promote knowledge and experience sharing.
The Minister highlighted that pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and regulatory matters fall within the mandate of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), and noted Pakistan’s ongoing progress towards achieving WHO Regulatory Maturity Level 3.
He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting medical tourism, stating that matters related to visa facilitation would be advanced through consultations with Pakistani diplomatic missions.
To ensure effective and timely progress, it was shared that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would expedite the process of finalising the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) through close coordination.
