ISLAMABAD: Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Saturday said the vote is a sacred trust and a national responsibility through which citizens express their will and determine the country’s direction.
He said democracy is rooted in the opinion of the people, who elect representatives of their choice through the power of the ballot.
The Speaker expressed these views in his message on National Voters Day, observed annually on December 7.
Ayaz Sadiq emphasized that active and broad participation of citizens is essential for a strong and vibrant democracy. He added that not voting is equivalent to neglecting one’s rights and responsibilities. He also appreciated the role of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in ensuring transparent and fair elections across the country.
“The people elect their representatives through their vote, and those representatives are responsible for working towards national development and public welfare in line with the aspirations of the people,” he stated.
Highlighting the importance of youth engagement in the electoral process, the Speaker said it is crucial to create awareness among young voters about the significance of voting. Youth participation in democratic processes, he added, would not only strengthen democracy but also open new avenues for national development. He reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to continuing efforts to raise awareness about voting and reinforce democratic practices.
In his message on National Voters Day, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah stated that casting a vote is the constitutional right of every citizen and a vital means of strengthening democracy. He urged all citizens aged 18 and above to fully contribute to the country’s progress by exercising their right to vote. He further said that promoting democratic values and ensuring the supremacy of the Constitution are essential for safeguarding public rights.
The Deputy Speaker reaffirmed Parliament’s commitment to advancing democratic stability, enhancing public awareness, and promoting the importance of the right to vote.
