ISLAMABAD: A local court on Friday declared former special assistant to the prime minister on accountability and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Mirza Shahzad Akbar as a proclaimed offender in a controversial tweet case.
Judicial Magistrate Muhammad Abbas Shah, while hearing the case, declared Akbar a proclaimed offender for his continued absence in the hearing of a case registered against him by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in July this year over allegedly defamatory and controversial remarks shared on his social media account.
According to the written order of court, Akbar repeatedly failed to appear despite being summoned multiple times. The challan in the case has already been submitted before the court, it says.
The order noted that the accused did not cooperate with the investigation and remained absent continuously during the legal proceedings.
It is pertinent to mention here that Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi handed over the extradition documents for Shahzad Akbar and retired Major Adil Raja to British High Commissioner Jane Marriott during a meeting on December 4, stressing that both individuals are wanted in Pakistan and should be repatriated. The two sides also discussed the repatriation of Pakistani nationals residing illegally in the UK.
Naqvi noted that while Pakistan upholds freedom of expression, the spread of fake news poses a global challenge. He said no state can permit its citizens abroad to malign national institutions and welcomed the UK’s cooperation in addressing anti-Pakistan propaganda.
