KARACHI: Zubair Tufail, President of the United Business Group (UBG), has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident that occurred yesterday at NIPA Chowrangi, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, where a three-and-a-half-year-old innocent child lost his life.

He said that Chhipa, Edhi, and local citizens not only participated in the rescue efforts on their own but also collected donations to arrange machinery for excavation, yet government machinery was nowhere to be found. Even the desperate cries of the child’s mother could not awaken the authorities, while politicians continued to blame one another.

He said the entire city is mourning this heartbreaking tragedy, he demands that the failures, criminal negligence, and mismanagement of those responsible must be brought to light.

Zubair Tufail said that many incidents resulting in the deaths of children have occurred in the city, yet no one is willing to accept responsibility. Citizens are sometimes crushed under dumpers, sometimes falling into drains and open manholes, but no attention is being paid to improving the infrastructure. He said that Karachi is Pakistan’s largest city and the hub of commercial and economic activity and the entire country runs on the taxes generated from Karachi, yet the city is in a state of complete decay. Roads are unfit for driving, the sewage system is poor, and open manholes have become death traps—but no authority is even willing to cover the manholes properly.

Zubair Tufail urged Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab to take action against those who were negligent in their duties, regardless of which political party they belong to.
