ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek Tahaffuz-e-Aayin-e-Pakistan (TTAP), a joint opposition alliance, on Tuesday held a rally from Parliament House to the nearby Supreme Court building to register their protest against the recently passed contentious 27th Constitutional Amendment.
TTAP Chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai and other leaders, including Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Salman Akram Raja, former speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser, members of parliament, lawyers, and workers, participated in the protest rally.
The participants carried placards chanted slogans against the government and demanded the immediate release of former prime minister and the founding chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan.
Heavy contingents of police personnel were deployed on the occasion to avert any untoward incident.
Talking to reporters outside the SC building, Achakzai announced that TTAP would observe a “black day” besides holding peaceful protest demonstrations every Friday all over the country.
He urged the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government – where PTI is in power – to facilitate the protesters of the ‘black day’. Battles and efforts will continue till the independence of the judiciary, he added.
Achakzai alleged that the incumbent regime has come into power through a stolen mandate which actually belonged to PTI, adding that the distribution of PTI’s reserved seats for women was unjust, outright high-handedness, and illegal.
He further claimed that the constitution was “abrogated and tampered with,” calling on the masses to take to the streets against the recent changes in the constitution by the powers that be.
Addressing the rally, Allama Nasir Abbas said the march reflected their struggle for the “protection of the constitution,” asserting that access to justice in the country has effectively been blocked after the recent so-called legislation.
“We walked from Parliament to the Supreme Court to show the world that all doors of justice have been shut for the people of Pakistan, and the world must see what’s going on in Pakistan,” he lamented.
He added that a consensus document called the 1973 Constitution has now become a contested document, stressing that no legislation should contradict its spirit. Freedom of expression, he added, was being increasingly suppressed in Pakistan.
Qaiser said that the PTI would continue its struggle for the restoration of the 1973 Constitution, and the recent changes made to it would be restored on a priority basis, the day the PTI comes into power.
He said that those getting lifetime immunity for themselves must know that it is neither permissible in Islam nor in any civilized society.
Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, the PTI chairman, declared that accountability is a must, without which no society can progress. However, he questioned the issue of “lifetime impunity”.
