PESHAWAR: A high-level German delegation visited the Building Energy Research Centre (BERC) at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Peshawar.

The visit aims to explore new avenues of collaboration in Pakistan’s clean energy transition, particularly in energy-efficient building design and sustainable urban development.

The visit was part of the BMZ-funded project “Transformation of the Building Energy Sector: Pathway towards a Cleaner and Greener Pakistan,” through which Germany and Pakistan are working together to promote innovative, energy-efficient construction practices and strengthen institutional capacity in the sector.

The delegation was led by Christiane Amari, Head of Division for Pakistan and Afghanistan (BMZ); Anna Friedemann, Senior Policy Officer for Pakistan (BMZ); Dr Sebastian Paust, Head of Development Cooperation (German Embassy); Lena Paust, First Secretary Development (German Embassy); Alicia Beck, Country Manager (GIZ HQ); Maria-Jose Poddey, Country Director (GIZ Pakistan); Wolfgang Hesse, Cluster Coordinator for Energy, Climate Change and Just Transition (GIZ Pakistan); Mohammad Irshad Khan, Project Leader for Energy Efficiency (GIZ Pakistan); and Alexander Fischer, Advisor Energy Efficiency (GIZ Pakistan), among others.

Prof Dr Sadiq Khattak, Vice Chancellor UET Peshawar reaffirmed the university’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s transition towards clean and energy-efficient systems. “Our partnership with GIZ and BMZ enables the development of energy-efficient, research-based solutions for the country’s building sector. We aim to further expand this partnership in other relevant fields where UET Peshawar holds unique expertise,” he stated.

The German delegation commended UET’s leadership in sustainable research and innovation.

The delegation appreciated BERC’s achievements through national and international collaborations and expressed interest in further strengthening the partnership, particularly in building the capacities of young professionals in energy-efficient construction.
