Mining, minerals sector: PM eager for Pakistan-Canada collaboration

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Wednesday he was eager to collaborate with Canadian leadership to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in the mining and minerals sector, an area of shared interest.

Sharif made the remarks during a courtesy call by Canada’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Pakistan, Ambassador Tarik Ali Khan.

The Prime Minister extended his warm greetings to Canada’s leadership through the ambassador.

Sharif congratulated Khan on his appointment, expressing confidence that his tenure would further solidify the long-standing, friendly relations between the two countries.

He highlighted Barrick Gold’s role in the RekoDiq project, calling it a key driver for economic growth in Pakistan and a success story of Pakistan-Canada cooperation.

In response, Ambassador Khan thanked the prime minister for the warm reception and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening Pakistan-Canada ties, particularly in areas such as agriculture, energy, trade, investment, technology, education, and people-to-people exchanges.

The Prime Minister also praised the significant contributions of Canada’s vibrant Pakistani diaspora, which he described as an essential bridge between the two nations. Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch was also present at the meeting.

Khan is the first Muslim to serve as Canada’s High Commissioner to Pakistan. He is well-versed in Urdu and has a deep appreciation for its literature.
