KARACHI: To mark the Breast Cancer Day, the Biomedical Engineering Department of Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) in collaboration with PASTIC and EU project BIOMED 5.0, organised an impactful seminar on the topic “Beyond the cure, psychology, nutrition, and science in the fight against cancer”.
The event focused on breast cancer awareness and education, and brought together experts and community members i.e. Dr Yabinda, Dr Sundus Dastagir, Dr Qudsia Tariq, Dr Bilal Hassan, Dr Tahira Mohsin, Samar Abdi, Engr Aqsa to discuss the critical issues regarding breast cancer, its prevention, and treatment options. The Chief Guest of the event was Erum Akbar Ali Khan, Chairperson of Zakir Ali Khan Foundation.
In her compelling address, Chairperson of the Zakir Ali Khan Foundation, Erum Akbar Ali Khan, underscored the importance of early detection and the vital role of education in combating breast cancer.
She stressed the need for community support and awareness initiatives to empower individuals to control their health. “Awareness is the first step towards prevention.
Regular self-examinations and mammograms can lead to early diagnosis, significantly increasing the chances of successful treatment, because early detection of blood cancer can save life,” added Erum Akbar.
Speakers including Member of Sindh Assembly Shariq Jamal pointed out that people in big cities know about this disease, but people in remote areas still have no awareness or very little information about this disease.
The rate of breast cancer is constantly increasing. They emphasized on spreading awareness among the people about the hazards of the breast cancer. In case of any change in the body, consult a doctor instead of using home remedies. Do not hide this disease and take it as stigma.
Registrar SSUET, Cdre Syed Sarfraz Ali (retd) said that Sir Syed University is not only playing a prominent role in the field of technical education but is also fulfilling its responsibilities on important social issues like public health.
Organizing a seminar on a sensitive and important topic like breast cancer is proof that we want to provide awareness along with knowledge to our students and society. We hope that such initiatives will bring about a positive change in the society and people will be able to make better decisions regarding health.
Being a focal person, Chairperson of the Biomedical Engineering Department, Prof. Dr Sidra Abid Syed, played a pivotal role in arranging this program. In her vote of thanks, she emphasized the department’s dedication to raising awareness about vital health issues and fostering knowledge sharing.
