KARACHI: The International Maritime Conference (IMC-25) opened on Tuesday at the Karachi Expo Centre, bringing together policymakers, naval officers, industry leaders, and maritime experts from across the world to deliberate on key issues shaping the global maritime landscape.

The two-day conference is being held concurrently with the Pakistan International Maritime Expo and Conference (PIMEC-25) and is organized under the auspices of the Pakistan Navy, in collaboration with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.

The inaugural session was graced by Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue, Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, who served as the chief guest. In his keynote address, the minister emphasized the critical role of the maritime sector in Pakistan’s economic revival and long-term sustainability. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to unlocking the full potential of the Blue Economy, terming it a cornerstone for national growth and regional trade integration.

Aurangzeb highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships, modernized port infrastructure, and enhanced maritime trade connectivity as essential pillars for strengthening Pakistan’s economic resilience. He noted that initiatives under the Blue Economy framework could help generate new employment opportunities, boost exports, and promote environmentally responsible resource management.

Earlier, Rear Admiral Javaid Iqbal (Retd), President (Designate) of the National Institute of Maritime Affairs (NIMA), welcomed the delegates and participants, underscoring the significance of such platforms in shaping maritime policy and contributing to strategic planning. He said the conference provides an opportunity to develop practical recommendations for national and regional cooperation in the maritime domain.

The day’s sessions featured addresses and presentations by senior naval officials, maritime strategists, and academic experts, centered on the theme “Harnessing Blue Economy Potential for Sustainable Development.” Discussions explored emerging opportunities in maritime security, ocean resource management, technological innovation, and sustainable governance of marine ecosystems.

The conference will continue on Wednesday with thematic sessions, expert panels, and policy dialogues aimed at advancing regional maritime cooperation and sustainable use of ocean resources. A large number of delegates from friendly countries, academia, research institutions, and the maritime industry are attending the event, underscoring Pakistan’s growing role as a hub for maritime dialogue and collaboration in the region.
