KARACHI: A depression has developed over the northeast Arabian Sea, prompting weather authorities to warn of rough seas, gusty winds, and possible rain in Sindh’s coastal districts. Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the deep sea until October 3 as the system continues to intensify.
The weather system, which originated as a well-marked low-pressure area near India’s Saurashtra coast, was located at Latitude 21.0°N and Longitude 67.9°E, about 440 kilometres south of Karachi at 1100 PST on Thursday. It has since moved slowly west-southwestward and is expected to track towards the northwest Arabian Sea over the coming days.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), several lower Sindh districts, including Tharparker, Umerkot, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal and Tando Muhammad Khan, may receive light to moderate wind-thunderstorms with rainfall. Isolated areas of Karachi division are also likely to be affected, while hot and dry weather will prevail elsewhere in the province.
Sea conditions along the Sindh coast are forecast to remain rough to very rough, with winds blowing at 40 to 50 kilometres per hour. Near the centre of the system, squally winds may intensify to 45 to 55 kilometres per hour, with gusts up to 65 kilometres per hour. The central Arabian Sea is also expected to stay turbulent.
Officials cautioned that weak structures such as kacha houses, billboards, solar panels, electric poles and vehicles could be at risk from strong winds and lightning.
Meanwhile, river flows in Sindh remain steady. At 0600 PST on Thursday, inflows were recorded at 132,838 cusecs at Guddu Barrage, 117,175 cusecs at Sukkur Barrage, and 187,758 cusecs at Kotri Barrage, all at normal levels.
For Karachi, the three-day forecast shows partly cloudy and humid weather on Thursday with chances of light drizzle, turning mostly cloudy and humid on Friday with isolated drizzle, before reverting to partly cloudy skies on Saturday.
Maximum temperatures are expected between 35 and 37 Celsius on Thursday, 34 and 36 Celsius on Friday, and 33 and 35 Celsius on Saturday, with minimums ranging from 26 to 28 Celsius. Morning humidity is projected at 70 to 80 percent and evening humidity at 50 to 60 percent, with winds prevailing from the east and northeast.
Authorities urged residents of coastal and lower Sindh districts to remain alert, follow official advisories, and take precautionary measures as the weather system evolves over the Arabian Sea.
