ANKARA: Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday that Israel’s blockade and bombing of Gaza in retaliation for Palestinian group Hamas’ attack was a disproportionate response amounting to a “massacre”.

With Ankara offering to mediate, Erdogan and his foreign minister held calls with regional powers, the United States and others. However, Israel’s envoy to Ankara has said it is too early to discuss mediation.

Speaking to his ruling AK Party in parliament, Erdogan said even war had a “morality” but the flare-up since the weekend had “very severely” violated that.

“Preventing people meeting their most fundamental needs and bombing housing where civilians live - in short, conducting a conflict using every sort of shameful method - is not a war, it’s a massacre,” he said, referring to Israel cutting off electricity and water to Gaza and destroying infrastructure.

Turkiye, which has backed Palestinians in the past and hosted members of Hamas, has been working to mend ties with Israel after years of animosity. Unlike the European Union and US, Ankara does not consider Hamas a terrorist organisation.

While not openly blaming Israel, Turkiye has said the fighting is due to years of injustices against Palestinians and that the only path to peace is the formation of a sovereign Palestinian state in a two-state solution.

On Wednesday, Erdogan criticised Israel’s “disproportionate” attacks on Gaza as “devoid of any ethical foundation”, and called on the world not to “blindly” take one side. Leaving the underlying issue unresolved would lead to new, more violent conflicts, he warned.

“We call on countries in the Americas, Europe, and other regions to take up a position between the parties that is fair, just, and based on humanitarian balances. Everyone should refrain from acts that will wholly punish the Palestinian people, like blocking humanitarian aid,” he said.

In times like these the true charaxter of a person is exposed. Its a shame as Turkey was once an ally of Israel until this SOB got into office. With that said must I point out the obvious? There's a difference between purposefully murdering civilians .... as is the case with Hanas terrorizing Israel ...and civilians getting killed in response by taking out hotbeds of Hamas power centers in Gaza. Afterall Hamas purposefully puts missile launchers ontop of the roofs of schools and hospitals for the very intended purpose of gaining some public relations narrative... and this SOB buys into and promotes this false flawed and evil narrative. Hamas doesn't care about the safety of its own people ...having them get killed is part of their plan.

If the aide went to helping their people over the years instead of building a blood thirsty terrorist army we wouldn't be in this situation. There would be peace and a Palestinian state if they would simply start building a thriving democracy for their people at peace and alongside Israel. Cause and effect are flipped. The occupation .....to extent there is one ....is because Israel refuses to let a terror state be built on their border. That is the situation. In fact if Israel were really occupying Gaza Hamas wouldn't have had any opportunity to plan and build this terror act in the 1st place. Now imagine what would be if Gaza were an independent state... the Iranian military would reside right next door.

1. This was planned. 2. Impossible for Hamas to launch this type of operation without chatter, without warning. 3. impossible coincidence to have "rave" going on at same time as invasion where foreigners were there for the taking. 4. Be for the people. Isreali people and Palestinian people. The politicians are together. Hamas works for Netanyahu. Who is the victor here? Only Netanyahu. The Palestinian lose, the Isreali people lose, the American tax payer lose, Hamas will always stay as the boogie man, no power in reality. 5. Not a conspiracy theorist but for gods sakes, we believed 9/11, We believed no weapons of mass destructions, we are funding billions of dollars with 400k Ukranians dead, where is the out cry for these people? 6. I hope the voice of reason presents itself soon. Escalation can only lead to something none of us could have ever imagined only a few days ago.

If the Palestinians would simply get real leadership interested in building a thriving democracy alongside Isreal instead of years of terror...not just against Israel but their own people... they would have had their statehood long ago. Gaza has what could be a beautiful subtropical Mediterranean coastline thst just like in Israel could be developed into a beautiful tourist destination. Why after all these years does it remain in squalor? Thats not Israels fault. Israel has a thriving business community that could assist in a win/win in helping Palestinians build a thriving high tech nation. Are there some extreme Jews that dont want that...sure there are just like there are extreme political factions here in America. But the large majority of Israelis just want a normal thriving democracy build next door to them in peace and opportunities for so many. But there is never a partner from the Palestinian side to work with.

He is too busy trying to make himself into something he will never be. A world Leader or even a Regional Leader. He will chummy up to Putin, when convenient, asserts him self into NATO so he can be seen as a key vetoing Finland and Sweden for a NATO membership. He is in NATO, accepts US Fighter jets, while buying S-400's from Russia. He is part of the alliance that put Sanctions on Russia yet, will buy and sell everything to Russia he needs or Russia needs. He came to power by elections catering to the poorest the most religious and backward population in Turkey, and remained there for 22 years and just won an another election for 5 more years. At this point he is NOTG The Prime Minister or The President of Turkey, he is a full blown card carrying Dictator.

The United States is being played like a fiddle, and the media strategy of Hamas is inflaming and baiting the folks in Israel so that they seek total revenge. Israel needs to roll up all Hamas capabilities in Gaza and control all ingress and egress of materials and people. They do not need to accidentally or purposefully flatten homes, schools, hospitals, and the like. It is better to contain the area thoroughly and then "clear" it, except for most or all Hamas-related assets. Once Hamas cannot intimidate the Palestinians living there, things can be improved. As it is, Russia's Lavrov will make sure the world sees the West's double standard, from their perspective. The arguments about moral authority are similar to the difference between a murder charge and a manslaughter charge, where the person(s) in question is still dead. Many countries aligned with the West will perceive a double standard at play here, and the Russian troll/bots will see to it.

The massacre started with the creation of Israel itself. Palestinians were killed at point blank range, villages were razed to the ground, nearly half of the Palestinian population was forced to flee into refugee camps, including Gaza, where they are forced to live in inhumane conditions, blockaded to create the world’s largest open air prison. Israel continues to steal Palestinian lands and build settlements. Hundreds of Palestinians are killed every year, and brought to their knees, by the settlers and Israeli army. Palestinians are stateless in their own lands.

The fact is that the Palestinians have not had a home (country) since 1948 when the Israelis declared that they had formed the country of Israel through a terrorist campaign in violation of numerous treaties and pacts. The Palestinians (Muslims) were expelled and have since not had a homeland for 75 years. The Israelis are dead set against a two state system. There are three gates into Gaza, one controlled by Egypt. Gaza is totally at the whim of the Israelis and the only way to get out of Gaza is to work as a de facto slave in Israel. I am not condoning what Hammas has done, but what does Israel expect. They have oppressed the Palestinians and from time to time suffer blowback.

@Kime Mond, He's a psychopath. As long as it is his brothers doing it it's alright. Look what the Turks did to the Armenian Christians. March them into the desert and leave guards to keep them there.

Erdogan can shove it. He's always been a clown dictator that sides with terrorists. They're the worst member of NATO and should never have been allowed access to our technology. He clearly was dropped on his head as a child, accounting for the flat blockhead of his.

This fight between israel and gaza/hamas/palestine is what russia needs to drive a wedge into nato. If china decides to invade tiwain, and the are considering it earlier than later based on how america performs between ukraine and israel, there will a be a full blown WW3 being fought on 3 fronts.

Responding to massacre of innocents with a massacre of innocents is wrong. Period. Where is the moral superiority? I am not saying my country is innocent of this. They were wrong too. All need to do better.

Sounds like decapitating babies and defiling corpses is not a massacre to Erdogan. However bulldozing Gaza infrastructure to sand wont solve Israels problem. At some point one side will need to not respond to violence with violence. I dont think humans are capable of doing this unfortunately so i believe this conflict will never end. Both sides have committed horrors on the other. Its easy to rage against injustice and its hard to want to solve the problem.

In the United Nations Partition Plan for Palestine, 1948, the Palestinians were given a great big chunk of the British administrated Palestine Mandate. What was their reaction? To immediately make war on Israel with the goal of total annihilation. They've been attacking Israel ever since.

I agree with a two state solution. As long as Arab/Muslim countries suppy the other state for the Palestinians. Israel should keep the Gaza Strip. It's unsustanable as it's own country, and it's merely a prop, keeping people in misersy as Iran-backed-Hamas continues foster hate and postures for the elimination of Israel for decades.

@Mark Rubin, The civilian population doesn't care either, they cheer for the death of Israel, spit on naked women hostages and hit them with sticks and boards. I'm done thinking there is some difference between Hamas ideology and the Palestinian civilian ideology. After all these years it's pretty obvious they are one and the same.

Who owned Israel before Israel? palestine was unheard of . In the early first millennium BCE, the Israelite kingdoms of Israel and Judah emerged, before falling to the Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian empires, respectively. During the classical era, the region was ruled by the Achaemenid, Macedonian, Ptolemaic and Seleucid empires.

Say what you will regarding Hamas' stunning manoeuvre punctuated by war crimes against civilians, the simple cosmic fact is that Israel has done this with near impunity against Palestinians for over seventy years. Check out the astrology for Israel. Chicken home to roost time.

When one goes to war after being attacked the response should always be disproportuante. That's the whole point of war. A proportionate response only guarantees future conflict.

Israel was created by ethnically cleansing the Palestinians to create a Jewish majority Israel. Palestinians were shot at point blank range and Palestinian villages were razed to the ground. The massacre started then, and has been going on since then.

The widely-promoted concept that the Hamas attack on Israel was a "sneak" attack, i.e., unknown to Israel in advance, is ridiculous. Israel has a highly developed espionage system and controls cell phone traffic in the area. Simply put: Israel knew in advance that Hamas would attack, and all the mainstream media assertions about the Hamas attack being a big surprise are lies. Where did Hamas get all the weapons? I'll answer this with another question. What happened to all the weapons we sent to Ukraine?

I absolutely agree. Isreal pushed the Palestinians off their land to begin with. With many disbursed to refugee camps. The rest have been caged in basically a concentration camp. Under harsh conditions, power outages, water unfit to drink and no jobs because of their blockade. This has been going on for 75 years. I'm amazed at people's ignorance of history.
