Ufone telecom gets unused Pakistan's spectrum, govt earns $279mn

ISLAMABAD: Cellular company Ufone on Friday won a bid for Pakistan's unused spectrum with $279 million, said the country's telecom authority.

Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) started the process to sell the unused spectrum late last year.

The spectrum is in the 1800 and 2100 MHz bands typically used by operators for 4G LTE (long-term evolution) networks that offer faster video streaming and internet downloads.

"Total Spectrum won by Ufone is 9 MHz in 1800 MHz band which is 70.3 percent of the total offered spectrum in the said band during the current auction," the PTA said in a statement.

The addition will boost Ufone spectrum holdings from 6 MHz to 15 MHz in 1800 MHz band, enhancing quality and increasing coverage for voice and data services, it added.

PTA receives only one bid for auction for NGMS spectrum

Pakistan has nearly 100 million 3G/4G subscribers, and the new spectrum known as Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS) is seen a precursor to any 5G launch.

The Pakistan telecom market is dominated by Jazz, backed by Netherlands-based Veon Ltd; Telenor Pakistan, backed by Norway's state-controlled Telenor; Zong, owned by China Mobile; and Ufone, which is controlled by state-owned Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd.

Ufone simply has the worst of a kind packages and very unreliable. They must reset everything and make Ufone better than jazz and Telenor. Ufone was literally charging 500 rupees for just using Facebook

I am Ufone user since 2010. Ufone 3G services were better than Jazz 4G uptil 2020. Since Ufone has became 4G its services are now poor and doesn't even work at main points of Lahore City like Bhatti Chowk... However, Zong is leading the market in respect of data services. Nevertheless Telenor is also not bad in remote areas.

Honestly speaking I am a resident of Karachi and the service Ufone providing here is much better as compared to its competitors, Main thing is Voice which is far better rather then any other network , this upgradation will enhance the network quality , great going Ufone

Although I am a Ufone user from past 7 years but using this network is Always Good in terms of call incentives of Ufone But Using it 7 years I faced an Issue that my balance became deducted with Turning On my Mobile data of Smartphone Then I realized that Ufone have to give their customers an option just like Zong have given in their app that balance saver offer from where the User Can subscribe to an offer to avoid from deducting balance. They must to focus on their bundle to make them less expensive or should give make your bundle option in their app.

Ufone was best when compared to 3G only in terms of its efficiency. For 4G, It remained far behind to compete other operators in packages, coverage etc. Govt will have to revisit everything to bring it at par with othet operators.

I don't know it just happens with me or what? All my balance (wether it's 50 or 500) is deducted continuously on the internet even when my mobile data is off. I always keep my mobile data off but I receive a message that my balance is being deducted on the internet. Moreover ufone does not provides the services of customized package creation like telenor build your own offer. Hopefully ufone take a notice of this and fix up these issues.

In Kashmir, Voice quality is better than Telenor although Ufone is not providing 3G/4G services which is weakness of Ufone. Ufone has less user than other telecoms. All other companies 3G/4G services since 2018
