PESHAWAR: A sharp increase in prices of live chicken/meat, eggs, sugar, flour, vegetable, cooking oil and other grocery items was witnessed in the retail market, according to a survey conducted by Business Recorder here on Sunday.
An upward trend in prices of live chicken/meat was continued in the retail market as being sold at Rs266 per kilogram which was selling at Rs243 per kilogram in the previous week.
Similarly, the price of farm eggs has also been increased at Rs170-180 per doze, which went down at Rs140-150 a few days back. The survey said beef with bones was being sold at Rs500 and boneless at Rs550-600 per kilogram. Fresh milk is being sold at Rs120/130 per litre and yogurt at Rs100-120 per kilogram.
Poultry dealers and farm owners attributed the prices have gone up because of closure numbers of poultry farms and low bread/production, besides a steep rise in prices of chicken fodder and other expenses.
The survey witnessed a noticeable increase in the prices of cooking oil/ghee, as cooking oil and ghee increased Rs20-30 and Rs40 per kilogram/litre in the local market. Sugar price has also touched at Rs100 per kilogram in the retail market, which was previously available at Rs95 per kilogram.
Gram flour (baisen) was being sold at Rs120-140 per kilogram against the price of Rs90-100 per kilogram. A 20-kg mixed-flour sac was being sold within range of Rs850-900 and Rs1000, while a 20 kg fine flour bag was available at Rs1100-1200 and Rs1250 in the open market. A mixed trend was witnessed in prices of vegetables in the local market, according to the survey. Tomatoes are being sold at Rs30 per kilogram against the price of Rs40 per kilogram, onion at Rs60 per kilogram against the price of Rs50 per kilogram in the previous week.
Once again, he rate of ginger has escalated as available Rs420-450 per kilogram against the price of Rs400 per kilogram in the previous week.
Likewise, the garlic was being sold at Rs250 per kilogram. Red potato is being sold at Rs50 per kilogram against the price of Rs40 per kilogram in the previous week. Lemon was being sold at Rs120 per kilogram, green chili at Rs150 per kilogram.
Ladyfinger was being sold at Rs150 per kilogram, bitter gourd (karela) at Rs120-150 per kilogram, capsicum is being sold at Rs120 per kilogram, arvi is being sold at Rs100, peas at Rs80 per kilogram, turnip at Rs50 per kilogram, tinda at Rs60 per kilogram, French bean at Rs150-200 per kg, cabbage at Rs60 per kg, cauliflower at Rs30 per kilogram, bringle at Rs60 per kilogram.
A bundle of radish was available at Rs30, while spinach bundle was available at Rs25. Cucumber was being sold at Rs60 per kilogram.
Fruits being a staple food, which is also completely out of purchasing power of common, as prices are sky-high in the local market. Pomegranate is being sold at Rs200-250, Kabul-origin apple is being sold at Rs220 per kilogram, while locally swat produced apple was available at Rs100-120 per kilogram, guava is being sold at Rs150 per kilogram, bananas are being sold at Rs50-60 and R70-80 per dozen, fruiter was available at Rs80 per dozen, orange at Rs120 per dozen.
