Youth of Pakistan has the spark to compete the world in each and every field of life, while the need is to recognise the real potential of the people of Pakistan. This was the crux of the event organised by the National Paralympics Committee of Pakistan at the launch of its official website www.npcpakistan.org organised here on Friday.
Tariq Mustafa, President NPC, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF) Chef Executive Officer (CEO), Qazi Azmat Essa and Vice-President NPC, Parveen Qadir were among the participants. The participants said that the NPC has launched the website to let persons with disabilities know that there is an organisation in the country which caters for their sports needs and encourages them for their rehabilitation.
"We want to celebrate the departure of our team on July 24, 2012 for the Pre-Games Training Camp arranged at the University of Bedfordshire at the conclusion of which the team will enter the Athletes Village on August 22 to contest for world titles in the London 2012 Paralympics Games that will commence with an unforgettable Opening Ceremony August 29," the President NPC said.
The President NPC said that first time in history Pakistan will purchase the Broadcasting Rights of Paralympic Games despite acute scarcity of financial resources. Two athletes are headed for the games. Haider Ali who suffers from cerebral palsy that has affected his right leg muscles won a silver medal at the Beijing Paralympic Games - 2008, and also broke the world record for long jump is desperate to repeat the historic moment so does.
Naeem Masih, who lost his hand above wrist, is an amputee will contest in 1500 and 800 meters race, while Haider Ali will participate in Long Jump, 100 meters and 200 meters race.
People with disabilities are entitled to equal access to education and employment, equal rights to parenthood, property ownership, political rights, and legal representation. Presently, there is no internationally binding convention specifically devoted to the rights of people with disabilities. A treaty on the rights and dignity of people with disabilities would create legally binding human rights obligations specific to the needs and situation of people with disabilities.
Disability is one subject matter that has never really received the concentration it deserves and has not been high on the priority list. Parveen Qadir said that as always, raising funds for the participation of Pakistan's team in London 2012 Paralympic Games remained difficult until only four days before the team's departure, the PPAF and Airblue came to their aid.
This year, the athlete's families, friends, fans and the entire country will be able to proudly watch them accomplish great feats in the world's most competitive disabled sporting event. Despite their impoverished and weak backgrounds, these athletes have proved to be an inspiration for the nation. We are confident in the abilities of our athletes, and hope that media and people of the country will support these athletes, believing in them that nothing is impossible when there is strong will to achieve the desired objective, she added.
