ISLAMABAD: A parliamentary body on Thursday asked the Ministry of Commerce to play a lead role in improvement of growth of the agriculture sector. The Sub-Committee of Special Committee on Agriculture Products, which met under its convener Shandana Gulzar Khan, asked the Ministry of Commerce to play its role in improvement of the agriculture sector of the country.
The officials of the Ministry of Commerce also gave a presentation on the steps taken towards the National Assembly Standing Committee on Agriculture Products agriculture sector reforms. According to the presentation that Pakistan has significant agri warehousing capacity for filed crops.
This includes five million tons of silo capacity including over one million tons with rice exporters, and 4.3q million tons of government's wheat storage, it says. It says that proper warehouses present in mills but not in mandi (markets) or farms. The official of the Ministry of Commerce also briefed the committee about service provider model.
They told the committee that in districts, Thatta and Badin, farmers have been paying in advance to receive nursery and transplantation services. The meeting was also attended by Rao Muhammad Ajmal Khan, Malik Muhammad Ehsan Ullah Tiwana, and some others as special invitees.
