Pakistan sets new record in electricity generation

With the construction of new power plants bringing in additional electricity into the national grid, Pakistan managed to set a record of producing over 23,000 megawatts of electricity for the first time ever, said Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar.

“A new record was created for power generation in the country,” said Umar in a tweet post. As per the federal minister, the record was achieved on Tuesday at around 3 pm, when Pakistan generated 23,116 MW of electricity.

“For comparison, the highest generation level achieved prior to PTI government was 20,811 MW on the 24th of July 2018,” informed Umar showing a net increase of 2,300 MW.

With the demand for electricity increasing, Pakistan is eyeing towards renewable sources including solar power and wind to meet its energy needs. "Pakistan is moving forward with the aim of reducing air pollution and curbing climate change. We intend to move to 30 percent of renewable energy in our energy mix, together with another 30 percent of hydel power generation,” said Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Petroleum, Nadeem Babar, while inaugurating the country’s first electric vehicle charging station.

“These efforts coupled with a move towards electric vehicles will greatly help in achieving the mission of the prime minister of Pakistan of a Clean and Green Pakistan. The government is supporting all stakeholders involved as the world adapts to this eco-friendly technology," he added.
