We will provide additional 100MW electricity to K-Electric to overcome loadshedding: Ayub

  • Minister says K-Electric failed to upgrade its system over the years and it has constraints to take additional electricity from the national grid

(Karachi) Minister for Power Omar Ayub Khan has said we will provide additional 100 megawatt of electricity to K-Electric more than the contract agreement signed with it to overcome loadshedding in Karachi.

Addressing the National Assembly session on Thursday, he said the federal government has taken steps to improve the power supply in Karachi in order to address the problems of the people of Karachi.

Ayub said, "We have provided 30,000 metric tons of furnace oil and 100 mmcfd gas to K-Electric." He added, "We will provide more gas to the K-Electric which will help it generate 200 megawatts of power."

"K-Electric failed to upgrade its system over the years and it has constraints to take additional electricity from the national grid," he stated.

Despite odds, he said the federal government will help K-Electric to build its capacity.

Loadshedding has crippled routine life and business activity in Karachi as K-Electric restored to unannounced power outages coupled with hot weather.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) had taken notice of unannounced loadshedding and directed power companies to resolve all issues immediately.

NEPRA had said that “distribution companies are bound to provide an uninterrupted and reliable supply of electricity to consumers under the relevant provisions of their licenses”.

“All distribution companies are strongly directed to take immediate steps to minimize load shedding and submit an immediate report to the authority in this regard,” the notice said.
