Opposition walks out of PA against Black Friday trend

Opposition members in Punjab Assembly staged a walkout during a session on Friday, to register their protest against use of term ‘Black Friday’.

Lawmakers from the ruling party suggested to table resolution against ‘Black Friday’ but joint opposition called for concrete and practical steps to curb the practice, local media reported.

Only 25 members registered appearance in today’s session with both the opposition and government lawmakers being absent. According to local media, the speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal Khan expressed his exasperation on the no show of the members.

High courts moved to ban 'Black Friday'

On the other hand, Lahore High Court reserved its verdict on application against ‘Black Friday’, which states that Friday is blessed day and cannot be tagged as black.

Similarly, Islamabad High Court was also moved on Thursday to ban the discount sale under the ‘Black Friday’ banner festival for being ‘contrary to Islamic teachings’, local media reported.

Black Friday in United States of America, is the fourth Thursday of November after Thanksgiving Day. Since 1952, this day is regarded as the start of the Christmas shopping in US. However, now it is being celebrated across the world, as brands take advantage of the day and set sales for customers.
