Former prime minister of Azad Jammu, Kashmir Barrister Sultan Mehmood has decided to merge Peoples Muslim League (PML) with Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and vowed to work for strengthening of the party in the valley. Addressing a press conference on Tuesday at Zardari House with Member National Assembly, Faryal Talpur, he said, "I hereby announce to merge Peoples Muslim League with Pakistan People's Party unconditionally and will work for strengthening of the party in the valley."
Mehmood said it is unfortunate that AJK PPP was divided into groups due to some misunderstanding, adding that now all these misconceptions have been removed. "Pakistan is facing a number of challenges and unity in the party will help steer the country out from these crisis," he added. He further said PPP-led coalition government effectively highlighted the Kashmir issue at international fora, while the people of Kashmir kept the issue alive through their indigenous struggle.
Former AJK PM maintained that under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari, the country is moving on the road of progress, prosperity and development. "It is greatness of President Asif Ali Zardari to take me back in the party without any condition," he remarked. He added that PPP is the strongest party in AJK and would be victorious in the coming general elections, scheduled in April 2011.
Speaking on the occasion, Member National Assembly, Faryal Talpur said, "We welcome Sultan Mehmood back into the party." She said PPP believes in promotion of the policy of reconciliation and would also welcome others wishing to join the party. "We will unite the party in AJK and Sultan Mehmood's return will further strengthen it," she said. Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Minister for Labour and Manpower, Syed Khurshid Shah, Minister for Water and Power, Pervez Ashraf, Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Manzoor Wattoo and other members of PPP from Pakistan and Chaudhry Maqbool Ahmed, former (MLA) AJK were also present on the occasion.
